We Are Still Here was painted by award-winning Yaqui artist, Michael Horse. The Dancer has his eagle feather fan lifted up to the eagle who is speaking to the man as he lifts up his prayers. The document is the periodical "The Red Man" from the Carlisle Indian School which is where the administrators and teachers tried everything they could to "kill the Indian and save the man". While this cruel practice harmed and even murdered many children, we can see today that it was not successful. This ledger painting celebrates the resurgence of Native American languages, foods, cultures and traditions. It is an image of perseverance and courage. More about Michael Horse below.
